Pole dancing has taken off as a legitimate way of burning calories, increasing strength and gaining flexibility, but now is seeking Olympic acceptance. According to the Associated Press there are at least 4,000 supporters who have signed a petition seeking the International Olympic Committee’s approval to include the “sport.” Mai Sato is the pole dancing world champion. She trains five hours a day, five days a week, and wants to be recognized.

“I could definitely see pole dancing in the Olympics,” said Mai. “I would love to win a gold medal.”

Ania Przeplasko, the founder of the International Pole Dancing Fitness Association, the sport’s fledgling supervisory body (Hong Kong-based), told press,”There will be a day when the Olympics see pole dancing as a sport,” she said. “The Olympic community needs to acknowledge the number of people doing pole fitness now. We’re shooting for 2012.”

While I know pole dancing is incredibly hard and takes an insane amount of skill and practice I just don’t know that I can see it in the Olympics. What do you think?
