Japan has left the world figure skating championships with the gold medal in the women’s and men’s competition. Mao Asada took silver in the Olympics this year behind gold medalist Kim Yu-na, but the tables were turned. This time Kim Yu-na was the bridesmaid.
Despite not winning either the long or short program, Mao’s combined score edged out the competition and claimed the gold. Mao is already thinking about the championships next year when they will be hosted by Japan.
“The gold will give me a lot of confidence for next season when we have the world championships in Tokyo,” said Mao.
Mao credits her placing to her trademark triple axel jump. She is the only female in the world doing them consistently in competition.
