Jessica Jean

Jessica Jean competed last weekend (16 January) at the 2016 Canadian Junior Weightlifting Championship in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The 19-year-old from Bexon had previously taken medals at this level, but in her last year in the junior ranks, her goal was to win it all.

Hosted by the Saskatchewan Weightlifting Association, under the auspices of the Canadian Weightlifting Federation / Halterophile Canadienne (CWFHC), the Junior Championship brings together the very best from around Canada, at the home venue of host club, Flux School of Human Movement.

Jessica has been representing Ontario, since moving to Toronto in her mid-teens, when she discovered the sport of weightlifting. On this occasion, she helped her women’s team get second place behind Quebec.

Contesting the 63kg class, Jessica was actually the joint lightest person in her category. But she was also one of the more experienced. Her lifts of 75kg for snatch and 91kg for clean and jerk were well within what she has achieved in the past, and her total lift of 166 was 10kg better than British Columbia’s Jeenat Bilen in second.

Delighted with the win, Jessica said: “Thank you to my coach for being a wonderful coach! Also thanks to all my family and friends who support me.”

In terms of Sinclair coefficients, which compare lifters of different bodyweight, the young Saint Lucian was the second-best athlete on the day. Her score of 232.831 was second only to the 263.605 posted by Tali Darsigny of British Columbia.
