This afternoon the independent.ie posted an article discussing TV3 Tallafornia Star’s Kelly Donegan’s dramatic transformation from ‘party girl’ to a female bodybuilder.

The article focused on Kelly’s transformation from a ‘26-year-old that lacked in focus and drive’, to a 28-year-old female bodybuilder.

Since leaving Tallafornia, Kelly has found a new outlet of interest, health and fitness. Kelly has since started a blog called BikiniBrawn, where she shares her growing knowledge about female bodybuilding in Ireland.

However, the positive article took a knock on Facebook this afternoon when hundreds of Facebook users started to negatively comment on the independent’s Facebook post.

Many of the Facebook commenters focused on the physical change in appearance, rather than the dedication that it takes to become a female bodybuilder and the change in mentality that Kelly went through. If you want to see the reaction you can view it here

Kelly later bravely took to Facebook to respond to the negative comments on her own personal page.

Kelly posted on Facebook explain that she thinks “The world is a funny place, and people never cease to amaze me with their ability to turn something so positive into something really nasty. I feel genuinely sorry for people who feel they have the right to pass judgement on the way somebody looks.”

(This post is in relation to the massive reaction to the Independent interview shared on Facebook, the comments seem to be annoying other people more than me so thought i would write a little post about my thoughts )

The world is a funny place, and people never cease to amaze me with their ability to turn something so positive into something really nasty. I feel genuinely sorry for people who feel they have the right to pass judgement on the way somebody looks. At the same time i think its brilliant that i have the ability to get such a big reaction and thank everyone for getting involved. Especially to those who can appreciate the amount of work i put in and can see how amazing this sport has been on my life. I am addicted and am a new girl since taking up Bodybuilding. I work really hard and have never been more confident. Negative and nasty comments is something i have adapted to over the years and it has become a pretty normal part of my life. How i look will always be my choice, other peoples opinions will never ever matter. I am a firm believer that nobody has the right to make you feel inferior and happiness and confidence is the best form of protection against bullying and negativity.

I work damn hard for my body, and all that matters is that i am happy.
I love my new body, i am healthier now than i have ever been and have no desire to conform to the norms of society.

Is it because i was formally a Model or on Reality TV that it makes it unexceptable for me to now be considered an Athlete ? Do people pass judgement on the way Katie Taylor or Jessica Ennis look as female athletes with more muscle. Is it just because of my background that people feel they can compare. Is it because i am a woman ?

Just a thought
smile emoticon

Any way to finish this off ‘ LIVE LIFE FOR YOURSELF’ Other peoples opinions of you are none of your business. If you have experienced this and have found it tough to take on the chin, think about why they are saying these things. A lack of understanding, maybe they are shallow or possibly themselves insecure. Feel sorry for negative people with nasty comments. Be the bigger person and smile.

Ps I will be writing a weekly diary with the Independent Style over the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned
