A group of weightlifting women from Lincoln will be pushing their combined power to the limits as they drag an eight tonne grain lorry over a mile-long runway to raise money for a member of their team.

The women, who all train at Darkside Training based in Lincoln and Horncastle, will take part in the gruelling lorry pull in support of competitive powerlifter Michelle Franklin.

Earlier this year, 50-year-old Michelle qualified for Great Britain at the World Classic Bench Press championships held in South Africa in May.

Michelle’s achievement was even more remarkable considering she had only taken up the sport 12 months ago to lose weight.

However, the powerlifter will need to raise around £2,000 for accommodation, training, kit and travel.

To support her, 25 of Michelle’s team-mates will pull a Wilmot lorry one mile along Hemswell Airfield and back again on April 9.

Michelle said: “I was delighted and honoured to be selected to represent Great Britain in the World Bench Press competition in South Africa, alongside other strong British women and other big names too.

“Training is going well too; recently I managed a 100kg squat, 135kg deadlift, and 58kg bench — and those numbers are rising.

I hope to highlight that not only can women compete an succeed in powerlifting, but also anyone of any age can pick up the bar and give it a go.

“My greatest obstacle however will be raising enough funds to actually get me to South Africa. The Great British Powerlifting Federation have covered my entry fees but not only do I need to consider flights and accommodation, but also the GB kit and the extra training in order to perform at my best.

“That is why I set up my Facebook page, Thisgrannycan, so people can follow my journey, and a Just Giving page, so anyone can help me on my way, no matter how big or small their donation.

“I am so grateful to the ladies at Darkside and also Wilmot for organising this lorry pull in order to help me achieve my goal.

“Hopefully people will come along too to really cheer them on and show their support.”
