A Sutton teenager has locked on to success after being crowned one of Britain’s best judo fighters.
Former Plantsbrook student and dedicated martial artist Kelly Pollard, is the new judo under 70kg junior national champion, thanks to her super-quick feet and superior throws.
Following her success on the national circuit the 16-year-old has since been accepted to train with Team GB at their base in Walsall University.
Kelly, who trains six times a week was overwhelmed about winning her medal and said being accepted onto Team GB was one of her greatest achievements.
She said: “It feels amazing to be number one! All my hard work over the years is finally paying off and to win at the British national championships feels truly surreal.
“But when I received my invitation for Team GB it just topped it off.
“Representing my country and wearing my GB back patch fills me with great pride – I still can’t believe it is happening.”
Kelly is now training hard for the year ahead and is looking forward to the Scottish junior and senior open this weekend (January 16) in Edinburgh. Followed by even more preparation at the GB training camp at the Walsall centre of excellence to tighten her skills.
Kelly’s father Gary, was over the moon about her success already and said the whole family was so proud of what she has achieved.
The 55-year-old said: “I am so proud of Kelly, her determination and dedication has really shown this year – we’re so proud.
“She has a big year ahead and we are all very excited to see what she can bring home to Sutton.”
Team GB’s next competition is at the women’s open in Arlon, Belgium, on Friday, January 29, where Kelly hopes to secure even more silverware for the team.
