THE dangers of steroids are well documented but what happens when a former professional bodybuilder, suspected of using the hard stuff, gets off the gear and stops training?

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS.

In 1993 Denise Rutkowski came second in the biggest bodybuilding competition in the world – Ms Olympia.

She won $20,000 (£12,755) but after being pipped to the post by fellow American Lenda Murray, Denise shocked the muscle-mad community by retiring from the sport.

She then spent the next two years at Calvary Cathedral International Bible College – swapping fitness for faith.

No-one heard much from Denise after this and the sport continued to grow without her – it should be said Denise never admitted to using drugs but bodybuilding forums are filled with rumours about what she was taking.

After 20 years the former pro-bodybuilder was hitting headlines again.

Denise was arrested in 2012 and again in 2013 for evading arrest – the original crime is still unclear – and her police mugshots are, well, jaw-dropping.

In place of the long blonde hair is a short mousy-brown mullet complete with wispy beard and moustache.

Daily Star Online spoke to health and fitness expert Yusef Smith, from Propane Fitness, about what steroids can really do to the female body.

“The main dangers of women using steroids are the virilization effects,” Yusef said.

“Women can start to acquire male sexual characteristics such as facial hair, a more prominent jawline, an enlarged clitoris, acne, as well as a disruption to their fertility levels.

“Steroid use is unpredictable. By disrupting the natural hormone level it is not guaranteed that once you stop using them, you will bounce back to your old self.

“Female steroid users could end up with a deficancy in the way their body naturally produces female hormones.”

There you have it kids. Don’t do drugs, don’t end up like Denise.
