Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us to the 1997 NPC Women’s Extravaganza and Fitness Championship. This year’s big winners featured Kumiko Yamashita from New York taking the overall bodybuilding title, Vicki Anderson from Sugarland, TX winning fitness, and the thickly muscled and very powerful Christi Wolf from Port Orange, FL claiming the strength event title.

The Strength Extravaganza’s focus was to provide a unique forum for women to compete in athletic contests that tested their muscular strength and development. Created in 1987 by promoters Bob Bonham and the late Kenny Kassel, they sought a competitive concept that would appeal to bodybuilders as well as strength athletes.
