Ewa Mataya Laurance, 46-years-old, is one of few women making money by sinking the corner pocket. She is a professional billiards player and fancies beating men, badly, but claims it is only when they deserve it.
“Hustling is not something I ever did other than a few male egos that had it coming,” she told Donna Spencer (Canadian Press reporter) in an interview during the SML Entertainment’s Spring Break 2010 tournament. “I’ve got some notches in my cues.”
Ewa has been named the Striking Viking and the name fits. She is a world trick shot champion, former nine-ball world champion, billiards celebrity and model who has appeared in New York Times Magazine, People, Sports Illustrated, Forbes and Glamour. She was also one of the founders of the Women’s Professional Billiards Association and served as its president from 1995 to 1997.
“The beauty about billiards is you don’t sweat a lot other than the pressure,” Ewa explained to Donna. “We have the luxury of being able to fix our hair, put on makeup and put on nice clothes and still perform at the top level. That’s difficult to do in tennis, golf or in ice hockey, when you are wearing head gear.”
Ewa is on the road as many as 275 days a year performing tricks in competitions, exhibitions and corporate events. She may be one of the few women making a living with a pool cue, but make no mistakes she has earned her way and she is amazing!
