Zoe Newson proved the comeback queen on the opening day (Tuesday 24th November) at the IPC 2015 European Championships in Hungary, winning silver in the European competition and bronze in the Open on her return to the sport.
After an enforced hiatus, the first European level competition for the Suffolk Spartans lifter proved a landmark event. The 23-year old athlete achieved a 90kg press at the second attempt which was enough to secure second place on the podium.
A change in IPC classifications during 2014 meant the London 2012 bronze medallist was ruled out of the sport temporarily until earlier this year when the rules were again revised.
British Weight Lifting Paralympic Performance Manager Tom Whittaker commented, “After missing the majority of 2014 Zoe has shown terrific determination and drive to succeed to get back on to the podium at the first attempt. She has dealt with a difficult situation excellently and continued to train unremittingly during her time off the competition platform.
Achieving this medal with a superb overall performance in Hungary leaves Zoe ideally placed for a top 5 finish in the World Rankings for 2015 which would be a fitting reward for all the hard work she has put in upon her return.”
Wednesday 25th November sees world-record holder Ali Jawad lift, whilst Oliver Brown and Nathaniel Wilding also compete.
