Whitsunday weightlifters

A group of Whitsunday weightlifters has shown it’s never too early to start lifting, excelling at the Queensland All Schools Championships over the weekend.

Five Whitsunday Weightlifting Club members attended the competition at St Laurences’ College in Brisbane, representing Proserpine State High School and Bloomsbury State School.

Emily Poles (BSS) claimed first in both the under-15 and 17 categories while Lillian Poles (PSHS) took home silver in the same divisions.

Leah Hannant (PSHS) also claimed second (under-15) and third (under-17) groups while Lily Wilson (PSHS) lifted silver on the podium, having finished second in the under-17 division. Similarly, Corey Smith (PSHS) came second in the under-17s.

The accolades didn’t stop there for the lifters, as the girls’ team won best schools team in Queensland following their excellent showing.

“All lifters performed extremely well and were proud to represent the Whitsunday region,” Whitsunday Weightlifting Club coach Leanne Knox said.

In other weightlifting news, the club plans to host a power lifting clinic at their Mount Julian base later this month.

Power lifting comprises three different lifts – a back squat, a dead lift and a bench press – and is considered a sport, hosting world, national and state championships.

“It’s about raw strength and helps people get strong,” coach Knox explained.

“You don’t have to learn such a technical lift.” A coach from Townsville is expected to take the session, which is earmarked for November 28.

Coach Knox is also contesting the Australian Open Titles on December 12, having recently returned from a masters’ world title conquest in Finland.
