A powerlifting duo will be ‘Raising the Titanic’ in Manchester in a bid to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Katy West, 36, of Prestatyn, and Nicola Polley, 40, of Rhyl, will be at Manchester’s Olympic gym for a fundraiser, where powerlifters from across the country will be attempting to break a world record for the most weight lifted by one group in one day.
The Titanic’s hull weighed 24,360 tonnes and the lifters’ aim is to lift this weight in one day, dead lifting weights ranging from 50kg to 200kg.
If achieved a new world record for the most weight lifted by one group in one day will be set.
Katy West, who works in Rhyl Library and who won a powerlifting silver medal at the world championships in Las Vegas last year, said: “I’m really excited about taking part. The deadlift is my favourite lift, the atmosphere will be incredible and it’s a great way to raise money as well as potentially set a new Guiness World Record.
“Macmillan is such a worthy cause. The charity does absolutely fantastic work supporting people with cancer. They provide a vital service funded by donations so I wanted to help raise as much money as possible to allow them to continue doing such important work.”
“My powerlifting programme will give me plenty of preparation for the event so I won’t need to do anything extra. This is definitely the first time this has happened and it’s the first time I’ve been involved in anything like this.”
The pair are hoping to raise £10,000 in total and can be sponsored by visiting www.justgiving.com/Raisingthetitanic or you can donate £5 by texting LIFT97 £5 to 70070.
