Pat Tombs

CLACTON powerlifter Pat Tombs produced a polished performance at the Eastern Region Drug-Free Championship, in Brentwood.

Christmas came early for the 69-year-old World Masters champion, who recorded successful opening lifts in all three disciplines – squat, bench press and deadlift – to secure her qualification for the British Championship, in King’s Lynn, at the end of February.

Veteran lifter Tombs achieved a comfortable 67.5kg squat.

She then improved on her existing British personal best to set a new British record of 45.5kg in the bench press.

Having conserved her leg energy, she then set a new British record with an eye-watering 103kg deadlift.

A composed Tombs went on to lift a massive 105kg, but missed out on another British record due to a technicality.

Weighing in at 48 kilos, this unprecedented lift eclipsed twice her own weight.

Coach David Gunning said: “Pat again captured the hearts of the powerlifting fraternity with precision lifting and a confident performance.

“I’m optimistic that with her continued training programme, she will produce new world records at King’s Lynn.

“And her world masters number one position has been consilidated by this wonderful result.”

Tombs will now resume her winter schedule at the Gallery Fitness Gym, in Clacton.
