According to Camille Wallace of the Canadian Olympic Committee on Sunday, Danielle Lappage of Olds, Alberta and Jasmine Mian of Barrie, Ontario each won medals for Canada in the 2016 Outstanding Ukrainian Wrestlers and Coaches Memorial Tournament in Kiev, Ukraine. The invitational event is a significant wrestling competition leading up to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Lappage won her silver medal in the women’s 63 kilogram weight class. Along the way, she beat Solomiya Volska and Sofiia Bodnar of the Ukraine and Oliveira Lais of Brazil before losing to Yuliia Lisovska of the Ukraine in the final.

Mian won her bronze medal in the women’s 48 kilogram weight class. Along the way, she beat Donia Roscovanu of Romania and Mariya Livach of the Ukraine. Mariya Stadnyk of Azerbaijan won the gold medal.

Lappage and Mian already have already qualified for the 2016 Olympics and are in fact the only two Canadian wrestlers to qualify to date. Mian earned an Olympic spot by beating Genevieve Morrison of Shawville, Quebec in the finals and Jessica MacDonald of Windsor, Ontario in the semi-finals of the Canadian Olympic Wrestling Trials this past December in Sherwood Park, Alberta.

MacDonald won the 2012 World Wrestling Championship in Sherwood Park, and has won two bronze medals at the World Championship in the women’s 51 kilogram weight class. Morrison meanwhile won the gold medal in the women’s 48 kilogram weight class at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto and the bronze medal in the women’s 48 kilogram weight class at the 2015 Women’s World Wrestling Championship in Las Vegas.
