Molly Harvey

Molly Harvey produced a stunning display to win the 48kg title at the Welsh Judo Open.

Just 16, Tonbridge youngster Harvey stormed through the competition and earned the praise of coach Chris Bowles.

“It’s a massive achievement for her age,” Bowles said. “She is very well advanced and we’re going to have to manage her on a weekly basis. She has absolutely taken off. She, along with Lanina Solley, are two of the hottest prospects we have had for a number of years.

“She’s relentless with her training, to win titles like that at such a young age, she’s showing she’s got the materials to go all the way.”

Next up for Harvey are the senior trials next month and Bowles expects her to shine.

“She’ll be there or thereabouts,” he said. “She won’t be far off, she’ll be hassling the seniors now and in 18 months time, she will be British senior champion, I’m sure of it. She’s a very bright prospect, the same as Lanina at 52kg. They’ll take some stopping.”

Bowles sees no reason both cannot be prospects for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Also next month, the annual Tonbridge Judo Camp will be held at Tonbridge School. Teams from Russia, Venezuela and Germany will be in attendance, along with Olympic gold medal winner, Kayla Harrison.
