A fitness fanatic from Tenby hopes to get Pembrokeshire’s first ever powerlifting competition off the ground later this year.
Elly Hill, who set up E.H. Fitness and Personal Training in 2013, to provide a complete fitness package via PT sessions, on-line training and outdoor fitness sessions, has now turned her attention to powerlifting, recently competing at the Ladies British Powerlifting Championships 2015 in Bournemouth, where she came 15th out of 30 in her weight class.
“I was never a sporty child and always tried to avoid PE, but when I turned 17 I joined my local gym with my father and everything changed, was soon training five days a week and my love affair with fitness began,” she said.
“Soon after joining the gym I began running and entering races. Over the past 10 years I have taken part in races from 5K’s right through to ultra marathons,” continued Elly, whose new love is powerlifting, after she competed at her very first competition back in July at the WPA (Welsh Powerlifting Association) Welsh Championships, which took place in Pontardawe.
“I have lifted weights ever since I joined my local gym and nothing gives me more of a thrill than lifting heavy and working hard. I am passionate about passing on the benefits of weight training to everyone, but especially women,” she continued.
The date for Pembrokeshire’s first ever powerlifting competition is Saturday, December 12, to be held at the South Pembs Weightlifting Club in Pembroke Dock, with a weigh-in scheduled for 8 am and start time of 10 am.
“The event is a novice competition, ideal for beginners or anyone just wanting to have a go at powerlifting. You don’t have to have competed before or be a member of any powerlifting federation to compete,” explained Elly.
“There will be demos of each lift at the comp and a full run through of rules and guidelines. We are hoping to have goodie bags for all participants and prizes for overall male and female lifter. The entry fee is £10, and we have already secured two sponsors, Feel Good Inc in Lamphey and Gorilla Sports UK.
“I am hoping that off the back of this competition the numbers of lifters will increase and people will see how fantastic powerlifting is, not only as a sport, but also as a community,” said Elly, who also runs powerlifting sessions every Tuesday and Thursday evening between 6 and 8.30 pm at South Pembs Weightlifting Club, for beginners and more advanced lifters, where people can go along and learn how to squat, bench and deadlift in a safe and friendly environment.
