Athletic/Lifting Background: “My lower body was always muscular due to 10 years of ballet from age 10 but my upper body I had to develop that on my own. Culturally, strength and conditioning was not favored for girls. After I finished with school, I set out on my own at first then found people to help me along the way. I started lifting in 1995 when I saw Cory Everson on Body Shaping and fell in love with her look (especially the legs), but I did not get serious (competing even at a local level) until the end of 1997.”
What empowers/motivates you as an athlete?: “Setting goals for myself and accomplishing them while at the same time improving my health and fitness status.”
On her strongest/weakest muscle groups: “No weak parts (at least none I will admit to) but my strength is my legs – specifically my hamstrings.”
On peoples’ reactions to her muscular physique: “Regardless of occupation, status, or level of education I have found that a man’s reaction depends on whether the man is insecure or not. It seems that self-confident men respect, admire and most like a strong muscular female. The others I try to make comfortable by smiling, laughing and joking which works for the most part.”
What are your future goals in athletics and weight lifting? ” I want a shot at the Ms. Olympia title. I placed 8th at the USA’s this year and I am aiming for top 5 in 2003 and I placed 9th at the National’s this year and with a top 5 placement in the USA’s I am aiming to turn pro. Especially, since the Nationals will be in my backyard next year – Miami Beach, FL”
On doing her part to win the battle of the sexes: “Men usually don’t want to challenge me but when they see my legs but occasionally (since I have trained at family community centers) boys who were obviously taught that men are stronger than women will try to match some weight I have done. Fortunately, the one instance I am thinking of there were plenty of people around to unload the leg press machine when the boy could not move the 20 – 45 pound plates he had seen me do.”
