Mimi Hughes is no guppy; she has begun the vast undertaking of a 981 mile swim in the Ohio river to raise money for two charities. That may sound like a lot, and it is. It is going to take her the better part of 8 hours every day for 60 days (if all goes well). Her motivation for this 480 hour swim is to raise money for Strong Women, Strong Girls (a mentoring organization) and for the Central Asia Institute (a non-profit organization funding education for women in Afghanistan and Pakistan).
“We are an organization that highlights the strength of strong women. Mimi is an excellent person to be highlighted,” said Vanessa Veltre, a spokeswoman for Strong Women, Strong Girls.
Mimi who is a mother of four said she chose to swim the Ohio river because, “It’s a beautiful river. Rivers have such personality. I can hear the life of a river. It’s like a symphony.”
