Generally, you would not think of the Boston Marathon, a race that is two and a half hours long, as an event that would end with first and second separated by less then five seconds. Last year, the race finished within a mere second separating the winner from the runner-up. Ethiopian, Teyba Erkesso, watched last years race with horror as her fellow country(w0)man, fell to runner-up in the last moments of the race; losing her lead, the race and her dream to a single second.
This year was the third closest Boston Marathon in the race’s history. Russian, Tatyana Pushkareva, closed the 90 second gap during the last miles of the race and nearly passed Teyba.
“When I was coming down the last meters, I heard a lot of noise,’’ said Teyba. “If I didn’t look behind and see her coming closer, maybe she wins the race. After I saw her, I increased my speed.’’
Teyba picked up her speed with the memory of last years race, crossed the finish line, lifted her arms in victory and subsequently threw up. With or without breakfast, she won, and the victory goes to Ethiopia.
