Anna Goodman, 23-years-old, one of Canada’s women’s slalom skiers, suffered a season ending injury Jan 3rd. It is suspected that she tore her ACL. She is the sixth Canadian to have their Olympic dreams taken away in the past five weeks.
Max Gartner, Alpine Canada’s chief athletics officer told press, “I’m a little speechless. I feel responsible for all these people and while I know that you can’t control everything it really hits you hard. We keep saying ‘bad luck, bad luck,’ but at some point you have to look inside the program and ask ‘Is there something we’re missing?’ It would be easier if we had made a major shift in some area — coaching, physical training– you’d have something where you go, ‘well, maybe.’ But we didn’t. We didn’t shift anything. There have been a lot of injuries internationally … but it does seem to be hitting us in the severity of the injuries. Every time [a Canadian skier falls], it seems to be a season-ending injury.”
