It was five years ago that news headlines were flooded with Hawaiian Bethany Hamilton, young surfing prodigy, being attacked by a 15-foot Tiger shark. The attack took her arm but not her dreams. In fact, only weeks after the attack, she was back attacking the surf herself. The now 18-year-old has rebuilt her technique and just became the runner-up in the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Junior Women’s Surfing Championships. Bethany told reporters, “I’ve adapted now (to having one arm) and got used to it. It’s been five years now so it feels natural.” She is looking to compete in the main women’s ASP tour since missing out on the 2009 tour by two places.
