At the 2014 CBBF (Canadian Body Building Federation) Bikini, Figure, Fitness and Physique Championships held in Edmonton on July 5th, the soon-to-turn 44-year-old Bindibindi Bains took home first place in Masters Figure, and this is the third year she’s won in her category. Speaking to Can-India, Bindi, the mother of two boys aged 9 and 13, has worked hard to reach this far. She trains really hard and it shows. For example she started to train for this competition last October, gained 5 to 10 pounds of lean muscle mass, not an easy feat but she did it. She was among almost 500 who took part in the different categories in this competition and she certainly stood out. As a South Asian female body builder, she is a rare sight. There is a misconception that bodybuilders get too muscular. Bindi says, “It is your choice how muscular you want to be and how you train can determine that. There are categories that allow you to be more feminine, for example, you can enter Bikini and Figure where you don’t have to be overly muscular.”
There is a feeling that body builders tend to be vain, but I am not like that. Sure I am proud of how I look, I worked hard to get to this point, but I am a regular person, I work hard, pay the mortgage, look after my children and home. I’m like anyone else. I lead a perfectly normal life,” she says. Next year too Bindi will be back to compete, she competes everyday actually with herself, as she constantly challenges herself to get better and better.
