On March 27, 2010, in Phoenix, Arizona, a legend in wrestling will be inducted into the WWE hall of fame: Wendi Richter. Wendi, two-time WWF Women’s Champion, one-time AWA Women’s Champion and two-time NWA Women’s World Tag Team Champion, was a huge part of the development of women in the wrestling entertainment industry. This video takes a walk through her career and soon to be induction.
Sarah Hildebrandt (in red knee wraps), a high school junior, who wrestles at 103 lbs, is about to become the first female ever to wrestle at an IHSAA individual semi-state tournament. Sarah (17-3) will face a freshman, Santo Marciano (25-6), Saturday in the tourney’s opening round at Merrillville High School.
“I’m pretty nervous; sure, I’m nervous,” Sara said. “People keep coming up and asking me about it. But everybody is so supportive. It’s kind of neat to know all these people are cheering for me.”
She commented about being the first girl in the semi-state tourny, “It adds to the pressure. I’m not trying to prove anything. I’m just trying to wrestle my best. Yeah, it gets to me a little. When I go out on the mat, sometimes I wish every eye in the place wasn’t watching me. I wish people wanted to see me wrestle, not just because I’m ‘the girl.’”
It’s not just that she is a girl, but that she is the best girl Indiana’s wrestling has ever had to date. In December she won the 103-pound weight class at Elkhart Memorial’s Charger Invitational. She dominated her male opponents, pinning two and whipping another by major decision. It will be exciting to see just how far she will go!
Just as 28-year-old, Zivile Raudoniene’s IFBB Figure career was reaching it’s true potential, she gave up her assumed Olympia crown for the WWE. The 5’5″, 130 pound Lithuanian is now settling into the role as a WWE diva.

Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (9-1) has proven once again that she is the 145 pound to beat. In a third round TKO, she quited the Marloes Coenen camp, pushed her loss record to five (17-5) and maintained the title. It is starting to look like there is no one who can seriously test Cristiane or make a run for the belt. Sportsillustrated.cnn.com reports, “Santos is unlike any women yet to compete in MMA. Her physicality and brutishness, which she called gifts, seems impossible to overcome for competitors.” However, Erin Toughill will be the next to try.
MMA fighters gathered to raise money for breast cancer survivors this past weekend in an event put of my LNF Promotions. It was the first event for LNF Ultra Cage Fighters and was a huge success. The night consisted of 11 MMA matches, a martial arts academy demonstration, Dr. Lisa Tito’s board-breaking spinning back kick, and the extreme antics of “The Human Floor” Pete Tino.
It was only fitting that the ‘fight of the night’ was between two female fighters, Kaline Medeiros (pictured) and Katie Merrill. Katie dominated the first round, while the second round found Kaline with a fierce will to win. The fight went to a third round and then to a decision. A decision that has fans from both camps screaming. The Kaline Medeiros camp was screaming in victory, while the Katie Merrill camp made their discontent known.
“The fight could have gone either way,” LNF Director Greg Mendes said. “But I agree with the decision. And you can’t criticize the judges, they called it the way they saw it.”
“LNF Ultra Cage Fights is backed by LNF Promotions, a non-profit company comprised of Daniel Ferrie and his two sons, Jared and Alastair. Until recently we had been mostly unaware of the continuing prevalence of breast cancer today. Then in March of 2008, our mother, Linnet N. Ferrie, was diagnosed with the disease. All within a year, Linnet underwent treatment, fought a hard battle, but ultimately and unfortunately lost out to the illness.
From our loss we have established LNF Promotions and with it we hope to create an event that spreads the message of hope and raises higher awareness of the disease in both men and women so that others will join us in the Fight For Life.”
Paige Nemec, high school senior, has just set the record for the first girl in Ohio history to win 100 career varsity wrestling matches. She has a record of 100-30, and all but one of the match’s were against boys.
“There’s always going to be people that don’t agree with women competing in male-dominated sports, but I think some people have respect for me because I think I put in just as much work as the boys,” she told press. “I see myself as a wrestler, not a girl wrestler. I just want people to accept me as a wrestler and not worry about, ‘She’s a girl, and some guys won’t wrestle her.’ I don’t see any difference at all.”
Paige isn’t just an amazing wrestler, she is also a great soccer player with 65 career goals all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. While she has been offered a few wrestling scholarships, she has chosen to accept a soccer scholarship. She will be missed in the wrestling community, but will not be forgotten!
The 17-year-old Bradford High Student is getting ready to embark on a trip of a life time. Casey Silkwood will head to Australia to take part in an 11-day womens freestyle wrestling camp designed train Olympic-caliber athletes. Casey is on the Bradford High School’s boy’s junior varsity wrestling team and is a 2009 United States Girls’ Wrestling Association state champion. She placed 6th, after having less than a month freestyle wrestling under her belt, at the Junior National Women’s Championship in Fargo, N.D.. As a result, she earned All-American status, caught the attention of college scouts and was eligible for elite training camps. She has a bright future and hopes to get a college scholarship. I look forward to hearing more about Casey Silkwood!
Natalia Murnikoviene, from Lithuania who was named ‘Women’s Physique World’s’ European Bodybuilder of the year for 1994, is an ex-gymnast and a top-3 IFBB Olympic Bodybuilder, takes on Fabiana. Fabiana (I am not even sure that is how to spell her name) is also mentioned as a champion bodybuilder, however I am not able to get any information on her other than what is given in the short introduction to the clip.
These two are featured in an all out bout of strength. Neither is noted for having any experience in wrestling. Natalia is proven to be too strong and knows it! Her English is good enough to make her point, but her opponent doesn’t seem to understand any more than she is willing to give up without a fight!
She maybe “only a freshman” but at the FILA Pan American Junior Championships at Guadalajara, Mexico, she was a superstar. Randi Beltz, freshman at Missouri Valley College, was the first female wrestler to win a medal at the MSHSAA Championships, and she did it twice. She was one of three on team USA to win gold and assist the team in finishing in first place. Randi was in the 63-kilogram weight class and won three out of four matches to clinch the gold.
Randi being a girl in a male dominated sport has found herself in matches with boys more than once, and has won more than once. A gratifying feat. “Some opponents get ticked off,” Randi said. “Some parents get ticked off. A couple of boys have cried.”
So while TNA wrestling is a bit Hollywood and slightly over the “top-rope,” it doesn’t take away from the athleticism or power. The Knockouts, a division added to the TNA lineup, has stepped away from pure sex appeal and added pure brute. One of the first women to the group, known as Velvet Sky said:
“When I came to TNA in 2007 and judging by the group of girls TNA brought in for the pay-per-view, I knew immediately we were going to be taken seriously, and we weren’t going to be doing bra and panties matches or pudding, jello and whatever else was being done [in WWE].”

The World Championships took place in Denmark last week. The U.S. hopeful, a recent high school graduate, Adeline Gray, was in the lead all the way late into the second period. Her lead was over when she was pushed out of bounds by Nigeria’s, Ifeoma Iheanacho.
Gray never recovered from the loss and ended up taking fifth place in her first visit to the World Championships. The U.S. team ended up placing 6th overall. This was the first time the U.S. did not take a medal miss since joining the competition in 1989. Continue Reading…
Gaetz Brook junior high in Nova Scotia, Canada may be where Jillian Mosher, 16, spends her school year, but the wrestling mat is where she does her schooling. She has been training for three years and entering weekend tournaments before she stepped on the mat at the Canada Summer Games.
Her debut at the Canada Games earned Jillian with the first medal awarded to a female in wrestling. Jillian competed in the 90-kg weight class and walked away with the bronze. She tried a variety of sports throughout the years but was drawn to wrestling.
