Teenager Zulfiya Chinshanlo set a new weightlifting world record in the women’s 53kg division to win a second gold of the Olympics for Kazakhstan.
The 19-year-old double world champion followed a 95kg snatch with a record 131kg lift in the clean and jerk to total 226kg – a new Olympic record.
Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Shu-Ching took silver with a 219kg total.
Moldova’s Cristina Iovu also lifted 219kg, but had to settle for the bronze because she weighed more than Hsu.
The powerful Kazakh trounced her rivals by taking the lead with a 125kg clean and jerk lift at the first attempt and seemed to have little trouble in extending the lead.
In fact, she tried to beat the new world record by grappling with 135kg but with the contest won, she could not lift the bar above her shoulders.
There was disappointment for Turkey’s double world silver medallist Aylin Dasdelen, who paid for waiting until the weight reached 124kg.
The 30-year-old failed at her first attempt at that mark, and could not manage 129kg either and bowed out of the competition before her third effort.
