Athletes, celebrities, soccer moms and blue collar dads are all stepping up to help Haiti in this dark hour. Musicians have been on channel after channel volunteering their time in telethons for Haiti. You can even donate by texting from your phone the word “team” to 20222, donating US$10 for Americans and $5 for Canadians. All the text funds? are sent? to the relief efforts.
“Since the earthquake hit their country, the Haitian people, including friends and family of mine, have been through so much devastation,” said Georges Laraque, an NHLPA member who recently played for the Montreal Canadians. “NHLPA members, together with the members of the NFLPA, MLBPA and the NBPA, hope that we can make a meaningful contribution and encourage sports fans across North America to join us in helping Haiti.”
Top Rank chief Bob Arum, a boxing promoter who sells out venues like Madison Garden said they will donate one dollar from every ticket? sold through the end of the year to the earthquake relief. Top Rank hopes other promoters will join in the efforts.
Haiti’s government estimates the disaster killed 200,000 people, injured another 250,000 and has left 2 million homeless in a nation of only 9 million.
“I have seen the pain in my parents’ eyes as they attempt to understand what has happened to our homeland and recognize a place they once called home,”? welterweight titleholder Andre Berto (pictured above)? said. Andre represented Haiti in the 2004 Olympics and lost family and friends in the horror. The country is hurting, the world is confused, but we can all help.
