Myrtal Beach is home to sun, surf, golf and Heidi Charest. Heidi started making waves several years ago with impressive wins in several women’s tri-fitness (WTF) competitions.
WTF? takes? on a? twist of it’s own. Not only is the name great, but the events really test the athletes. There are four rounds: Physique, routine, fitness skills and obstacle course.
When Heidi began an EMT class, and news of her competition success got out, she was encouraged to joining the fire department and subsequently the firefighter combat challenge team. The challenge consists of five tasks all of which must be preformed in a specific order with full gear, including a 25-pound oxygen tank. One of the tasks is? hauling? a 75-pound hose bundle up a five-story tower.
Her first run at the event (with? under? six months of training), she placed third. This year, with a bit more preparation, Heidi dominated the individual competition and her tandem team finished first as well.
Heidi is not just a force in competition but also shines on the department.? Fire Chief, Bruce Kline? said, “Heidi is the definition of a firefighter.”
