I realized today after finishing off the last bowl of my Black Bean and Beef soup, that I have a larger-than-average amount of canned black beans in my house. I counted 12 cans, but there are probably more squirreled away in other cabinets somewhere.
The reasons behind this are threefold.
1. Black beans are delicious
2. Black beans are very good for you, and high in protein.
3. Black beans are inexpensive
If you’re looking for a way to trim costs while still building muscle, or maintaining it, black beans are a great bet. I started buying them years ago when I was living on a very tight budget. I go to the grocery almost every other day, because I live in New York and don’t have a car to transport big loads home. So every time I go, I pick up 2 or 3 cans of black beans. I end up eating 1 can, and storing the others. This way, I build up a great stockpile of easy and cheap meals that are full of high-quality protein and fiber.
One of my favorite ways to eat them, aside from hanging upside down with a Collie, is simply to drain them and heat them in a saucepan with some hot sauce and seasoned salt. It’s not gourmet, but it’s really tasty. It helps to eat them while listening to Get on the Good Foot (b-side).
(Side note: I am seeking investors for development of a new product called eBeans. They will contain microscopic robots that enter your bloodstream and swim to your brain stem, take control of your motor functions, and make you dance like James Brown when ingested. May also contain trace amounts of actual bean.)
