First Bodybuilding, Now Jodie Marsh is to Host Female Wrestling Event

JODIE Marsh is to host a female wrestling tournament at which a dozen female glamour models will battle it out for the title of Queen of the Ring.

Body-builder Jodie says the event is the latest step in her personal quest to get the nation fit – and pals say she might even be tempted to go into the ring one day herself.

Jodie said: “I am so excited to be involved in this. Women’s wrestling is something I’ve always been facsinated by. It’s very empowering for for women to be strong yet sexy at the same time.”

She will compere Loaded magazine’s Glamour Girl Wrestling event at the Bloomsbury Ballroom in Bloomsbury Square, London, on September 13.

US Hoping to Win Big in Olympic Women’s Wrestling

Women’s wrestling was added to the Olympics for the first time in 2004. In the four weight classes, the United States won one silver and one bronze medal in Athens. After failing to win a medal in Beijing in 2008, this year’s team hopes to return to the podium.

Japan has been by far the most successful of all nations at the two Olympics where women’s wrestling has been held. The Japanese won medals in each weight class in Beijing – two of them gold – and they won two gold and a bronze medal out of four weight classes at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The four women on the U.S. Olympic wrestling team say they are ready for the challenge. Their training partners often include their male coaches.

“It’s a sport within a sport that’s not generally accepted and we’re still working on it,” explains Terry Steiner, who has been the U.S. head coach for all three Olympics in women’s wrestling.

Putting Their Arm Where Their Mouth Is

The D.C. Lady Arm Wrestlers (DCLAW) league held their inaugural event as a fundraiser for the House of Ruth, a national nonprofit organization which serves as an advocate for battered women and their children. The league brought eight women in front of an eager crowd to battle out in arm wrestling matches. Each women held a theatrical persona matched with an over the top costume. As each wrestler prepared, onlookers placed bets on their favorite fighters.

“It was a lot of fun. Everyone was getting in on it,” said Holly Rothrock, co-organizer of the league and event. “I think there were a few people arm-wrestling that weren’t even part of the competition.”

When all the dust settled, more than $1,500 was raised for the organization. The DCLAW looks to have competitions every few months with proceeds benefiting a different charity each time. There are already women expressing interest in competing in the next event.
