Well before her time, screen legend Marilyn Monroe was reported to have always maintained a regime of weightlifting and regular exercise. Visitors reported finding gym equipment in the corner of her living room. At a time before running was a popular for exercise, let alone for women, Marilyn is said to have regularly partaken in early morning jogs through the back streets of Beverly Hills. Marilyn Monroe was 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighed 128 pounds.

Retro Photographs from Pam Franklin
I remember purchasing a black and white tv some 20 years ago and being asked by the salesperson if I was planning to view reruns of The Twilight Zone. This photo is from the homespun website of Texas female bodybuilder Pam Franklin, who appears to date it from around 1986. I think that was the last time that the New York Mets won the World Series
Pam: “I was born and raised in Texas. I grew up around Corpus Christi, TX, which is where I first started working out seriously. My favorite body part to workout is back. I am married with two children. My husband, Darrell, has always helped me with my training. My children are competitive athletes. My son attends college and my daughter is an honor student and Fitness competitor.”
Monica Brant. Deadlift. Thong
1998 Fitness Olympia champion and now figure icon Monica Brant shown below in a retro video deadlifting 135lbs.
Is a thong practical workout gear? I think not, but with a booty like Monica’s you can get away with it…

Gladys Portugues better known now for being the wife of action flick actor Jean-Claude Van Damme, but to many in the physique community she would be better known as a bodybuilder and for her exotic beauty.
Gladys said she saw Rachel McLish on television winning the Ms. Olympia title and was inspired to start her own bodybuilding and weight training regimen. Her best placings were 7th in the 1984 IFBB Ms. Olympia, and 8th the following year at the Olympia.
Quads – Retro Gallery!
The quadriceps femoris (Latin for “four-headed muscle of the femur”), also called simply the quadriceps, quadriceps extensor, quads, is a large muscle group that includes the four prevailing muscles on the front of the thigh. It is the great extensor muscle of the knee, forming a large fleshy mass which covers the front and sides of the femur.
Remembering: The First Ms Olympia
The first ever IFBB sanctioned Ms Olympia contest was held in 1980 in Philadelphia with 21 contestants in all. The novelty of the event lead to great interest, organizer George Snyder was quoted as saying “I have had to turn away almost 1,000 people”.
The show was won by Rachel McLish, who is still an iconic figure to the day.

Sally McNeil: Wrestling
Possibly the most infamous female bodybuilder of our times – Sally McNeil shot and killed her pro bodybuilder husband Ray McNeil on Valentines Day in 1995 and was convicted of second-degree murder in 1996. She is currently in prison where reports say she is still training and working out.
Many say Sally was abused and was defending herself, while others say she murdered Ray in out of jealousy.
Prior to her incarceration, Sally was known to wrestle. Below is a brief retro clip of her:
