2012 London Olympics: Monica Brant in the masters women’s 400m trials

monica brant

Monica Brant is an icon. She has graced every fitness magazine cover from Ironman to Oxygen, and stood on the stages of the Arnold Classic and the Olympia. She is also well known for her glowing personality, F.E.M. camps, and can-do attitude.

However, when Brant announced that she would participate in track and field some people were surprised, but should not have been. Brant has been a true athlete all of her life, regardless of being on stage or not.

Saturday, June 30, was no different. Brant moved from the Olympia stage to the WBFF, only to cross the finish lines of the 2012 London Olympic trials. She participated in the Master’s Women’s International 400 meter race, and made the announcement on Facebook that she placed third.

“Placed 3rd in the Olympic Trials tonight. I led the pack until the last 90 m. The 400m World Champion and the Outdoor National 400m Champion came in 1st and 2nd. I just need a lil’ more time to condition that last bit! Next up is the Outdoor Nationals in Chicago in July and hoping to go to Worlds in Brazil in October. Right now I am enjoying my Proto Whey shake and taking pictures. It has been an amazing experience and I feel so blessed by God. Thank you to EVERYONE for all of your love and support. I appreciate and love you all! xoxo”

The Queen of Arms is No Spring Chicken

The 27th annual Bronxboro Arm-Wrestling Championships had a wonderful turn out. There were 65 pros and amateurs lined up to be named the best, but there was no one quite like Cynthia Yerby, 58-year-old, 10-time women’s world champion! By the end of the day, she was crowned Queen of Arms.

This was not the first time either. She has won the Queen of Arms title seven times, been named U.S. national champ 11 times and has pinned competitors in 31 different state competitions. She told Asylum.com, after winning her first seven world championships with her right arm, she switched to leftie…because she was bored.

“Guys are always asking if they can arm-wrestle me,” Cynthia told reporters. “One guy was 6-foot-6. I said, ‘OK, but let’s do it for $300.’ He said, ‘Three hundred dollars?!’ But he agreed, and then I beat him out of $300.”

Ashley Fiolek Can’t Hear the Critics

Ashley Fiolek, 19-years-old, can’t hear her critics, but then again she can’t hear at all. Ashley is deaf, but she is dominaing women’s motocross.

“I hear it my own way,” Ashley explained. “I can feel everything about my bike. I have grown up riding that way so it’s nothing new to me.”

Ashley is going to try and claim a third consecutive WMA title. She has steped up and replaced five-time champion Jessica Patterson as the sport’s premier athlete. She was born deaf, and her parents relocated to send her to a deaf and blind school. That didn’t last long. Her parents felt the school was teaching their daughter that she was handicaped, but they knew she was limitless. She has taken her deeming handicap and adapted to an amazing rider.

“I can’t change [racing] lines like other riders because I have to make sure no one is behind me first,” she conceded. “But I think the advantages are that I don’t know when someone’s behind me so I don’t freak out. Also, I don’t hear any smack talking at the races so it doesn’t affect me.”

Ashley is a Honda Red Bull Racing team member and was the first female to be given a factory ride, or full sponsorship. She also is the reigning X Games champion and hopes to someday compete against men. There is no doubt she will light up the track, no matter who else is racing.

All Heart and No Excuses

Michelle Errichiello, 27-years-old, was taking out the trash in February 2007 when a car jumped the sidewalk and hit her, severing her leg and part of her knee. After surgery, a hospital stay and endless therapy Michelle was determined not just to walk again, but to run. Both of which she accomplished after getting a prosthetic leg.  A little over a year after getting her prosthetic leg she competed in her first inter-club meet in October, 2008.

She has improved leaps and bounds since that first meet. Now she holds the world 200m record for women’s above-knee amputees at Blacktown in Sydney, finishing in 36.29 seconds and beating the previous by 0.18 seconds. This April, she broke the world 100m record at the National Athletic Championships in Perth, taking .01 seconds off the old record by running it in 16.31 seconds.

She competed in the World Athletics Championships in January 2011 in the 100m and long jump.

Building Confidence and Defying Norms

Blind women are now afforded the opportunity to join in the game and develop skills and abilities that before were only in their dreams. The women are fighting oppression and demonstrating strength that is amazing and inspiring!

In Nepal, there is a common superstition that if you are born with a disability it is a punishment for misdeeds in a past life, blindness is no exception and can be judged especially hard. Blind women have a particularly hard time surviving in such a harsh society. They are already viewed as second-class citizens just for being women and because of their disability, they often find themselves ostracized from their communities.

When The Cheelearders Are The Athletes

The South Jersey Storm All-Star Cheerleading team is not cheering for any team. In fact, al the cheering is for them. The Friday night lights mean very little to their sport. These athletes grind it out for one reason, to win.

The co-ed team of 36 are fantastic tumblers, dancers and stunters. They practice like football players and pull-off intricate routines like they are easy. The South Jersey Storm is ranked third in the world, and that is huge. Typically, competitive cheer is not widely associated with South Jersey, but that is all changing.

Competitive gymnasts generally only have college to look towards as they grow in their sport, but the Olympic committee has been petitioned to include it in the 2016 games. In accordance there will be an exhibition in the 2012 Summer Olympics, and six former and present South Jersey Storm cheerleaders have been placed on the 30-member USA Olympic Cheerleading Team.
