Venus Williams Eliminated in Australian Open
News — By Patricia on January 23, 2009 at 6:54 amIn the biggest upset so far at the Australian Open, American superstar tennis player Venus Williams was eliminated in Day 4 of the Australian Open in the second round by little known 20 year old Carla Navarro Suarez of Spain who is ranked 40 spots below her. Carla has played in only four Grand Slams prior, and has not yet won a tournament, and it’s safe to say she must be feeling great today.
A seven time Grand Slam champion, Venus Williams had never won the Australian Open coming into this event, but experts had tipped her as one of the favourites to win the title. Her sister Serena advanced 6-3, 7-5 over Argentina’s Gisela Dulko, but an anticipated Williams vs Williams final will not be on the cards.
