The boy’s are not the only ones with attention from the Kenya Rugby Union anymore. Currently, there are twelve girls’ schools in Nairobi alone, many with an average of 50 girls in their squad and not a jock strap in sight.

The 2010 Nairobi Provincial Rugby Sevens Championships, for the first time this year, had a girls competition, but it won’t be the last. The International Rugby Board said:

“It will soon become a requirement for tournament organizers to pay as much attention to the participation of girls as they currently do for the boys, which can only help to continue to positive signs of development.”

Uganda and South Africa are also experiencing a rapid increase in girls teams. Uganda’s increase came after playing at 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens, and South Africa’s increase from their ongoing preparation for this years Women’s Rugby World Cup in England.
