Barbell Girls

Gym may be all the rage for those who want to get fit – but what about women who want to go that extra mile and work on powerlifting?

The Barbell Girls strength training club has been running since March 2014 and is run by coaches Joanna Beattie, Dave Davis and Pete Stone.

And in recent weeks, the Brentwood Centre-based group has even had one member go to Sicily for a powerlifting world championship.

Other members have also begun to compete in federation events.

Coach Joanna Beattie said: “As a result we have secured sponsorship from Guideline Coaches London, who also supply the England men’s football squad coach.

“This sponsorship is being used to hold monthly female powerlifting squad development sessions at Brentwood Barbell.

“This is both for existing squad members and future members.

“We believe we are the only all-female powerlifting squad in Brentwood, if not Essex.”
