Another Year, Another Championship

The Fame National Fitness Championships took place this month in North Vancouver. The competitor list was extensive with over 80 names, but just one won the hearts and favor of the judges, 43-year-old Margo Northey. Margo is not a fitness veteran. She has only been competing for three years, but in her first year earned her pro-card. Before fitness she was a world class rhythmic gymnast. Upon retiring from competing she needed something more and tried fitness. She has yet to look back, and her efforts are rewarded. Even though she qualifies for the masters division by 8-years, she is doing just fine in the open divisions!

She had intended to compete in the World Championship this past June, but an injury left her on the sidelines. She made the best of a bad situation: 

“It was very disappointing. It is a huge amount of work and organization to make it to Worlds. I thought, at the very least, my execution might suffer but I never considered that the injury would actually sideline me! I kept a brave face, you have to, but it was pretty hard to go that far and not even get the chance to do my thing. I’ve worked very hard since then to rehab and work within the constraints of my injury. As always happens, there is a silver lining. I have had to really focus on my static strength and this has actually improved my routines, making them appear more powerful.”
